The UK and US have reached a landmark trade agreement that will ensure no tariffs on British medicine products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has pledged to raise funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment ensures that duties on these key products will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement follows recent statements to hike import taxes on patented drug products, with figures mentioned reaching 100%.

"This arrangement with the United Kingdom strengthens the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a release said.

Commercial Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's most significant goods shipped to the US, which is clearly the primary buyer for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data show that in the 12 months prior to the third quarter, the UK sold drugs worth £11.1bn to the US. This figure represented a significant portion of total UK exports in that period.

"This deal secures work, increases funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for medical research," a government official commented.

Detailed British Pledges

The deal involves several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it deems new therapies to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to raise total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal comes amid a protracted tension between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by assertions that American patients were paying several times more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been announced toward American operations.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
