Minister Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence official has stated that the MoD is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This wider security situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
