The star has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

He was given the cheque on October 16 as his new release his work was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots played in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to support thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," the star has said.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his award prize money to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp won the prize in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman Cocker declared that the band would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she shared her prize among multiple charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," she shared with outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that developed their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"The victory was ample," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our success affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had protected two local spots in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
