The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
